Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is an umbrella term that defines the methods you can use to get your website ranking highest on search engines - organically.
When 'Googling', your customers aren't necessarily searching for you. They may be looking for a similar business, or searching for information related to what you offer.
A recent study found 91% of searchers don't look past the first page on Google. If your website isn't there, that's a huge loss to your business!
The problem most businesses face is that SEO is so complex it can become overwhelming. So how can you make a start, when it's a constantly changing game with so many tactics?
1. Keywords
Keywords are the main aspect of SEO, and you'll use them across almost all SEO strategies. There are hundreds of ways to find and implement keywords.
But, if you're looking for a simple option, just use common sense. If your business sells cushions, use keywords like 'bed', 'interior design' or 'comfortable' throughout your site. Keywords can be anything related to your product that people may be searching for online.
2. Heading Tags
Now that you have your keywords, you need to focus your content on them. Optimising your text for SEO and readability usually starts with creating smaller paragraphs under great headings.
You'll find heading tags as a text option when you write copy on your website. Usually, they'll appear as H1, H2 and H3. A heading labelled H1 will be a title, and H2&3 will usually be subheadings for smaller sections.
These headings allow search engines to see what your content is about, and show it to the right audiences. This is why they need to be created carefully and accurately. The same principal applies for people reading your website - they'll skim headers to get to the info they want!
3. Blogging
Blogging is a great way to create content specifically made for your keywords.
To start writing blog posts, look at your keywords and think of topics that can utilise those words. This might include articles about your business or about your industry, how-to blogs, or list pieces.
But SEO isn't the only reason to create blog content. Blogging lets you answer your audience's questions, shows you know what you're doing, and builds a trusting relationship between your brand and the consumer. A great blog positions you as a trusted expert in your industry!
4. Hyperlinks
Your website should be full of links to other pages on your website and other relevant sites. Hyperlinking is about creating a web for potential customers to get lost in, so they spend as much time on your site (or thinking about your business) as possible.
To create a hyperlink, find the URL to the page or website you want to link to, and copy it. Highlight the text you're adding the link to, and an option to add the hyperlink will appear. Paste the hyperlink into the blank section. It's that easy.
And, don't forget to link to your social media pages!
5. Optimise images
Search Engines (and people) favour websites that load fast and make sense.
Your images should be striking and visually impressive, but high-quality images come with a price - they're large. Larger files take longer to load, so search engines don't like them.
To keep images at a high quality but reduce their size, you can use an image compressor online.
You can also optimise images by adding meta-tags and descriptions. If search engines know what your image is about, they can show it to the right audiences. Having descriptions also means your images are accessible, which should be standard!
